Advertising Spotlight – What are the best Star Wars Adverts?

I love Star Wars. That is the one fact generally established by all my friends and family. One of my earliest memories is watching the re-releases in the cinema as a kid. It’s fair to say it’s had a big impact on me. Therefore with it being May the fourth on Tuesday I wouldn’t be doing my job as a fan not to mark it in some way. So I’m going to show off some of my favourite Star Wars themed adverts. The rule I set for myself is that it can’t be for Star Wars products. Otherwise we’d be getting into some weird territory like the Star Wars Biscuit (yep that was a thing). Grab yourself some blue milk and hold onto your lightsaber because here we go.

Darth Vader v Orange

This one makes it onto the list simply for nostalgia. There are a couple of reasons why this stuck out to 13 year old me though. Darth Vader is pitching a film (weird start). He’s doing it to Orange the mobile phone company (even weirder). He seems to be doing it on Earth based on the suits the people are wearing. Then the references start flying. Attempts at mind tricks, force choking and then an acapella rendition of the Imperial March. The sheer absurdity of the whole situation is why I remember it 16 years later!

Kid Vader

It is an undisputed fact that at some point every Star Wars fan has walked up to an automatic door and pretended to use the force to open it. If a fan says they haven’t, then they are lying. This ad plays on that troupe. A kid is walking round the house dressed as Darth Vader trying to use the force to no avail. That is until his dad gets home and as Kid Vader uses the Force, the car revves startling him. Turns out it’s a function on the Dad’s key. I love this adverts purely for the wholesome factor and also because it is relatable.

Star Wars rivals

This ad exists in a grey area. It’s for Playstation, but came out at the release of Battlefront 2 and plays with the visuals from the game. I’m putting it on the list because well it’s just a really good ad. It shows a boy and girl who are both Star Wars fans but have different allegiances. They prank and try to one up each other constantly to increasingly absurd lengths. Honestly this ad captures the joy of being a fan and the fun it should be.

So those are some of my favourite Star Wars ads. What are some of yours? Let me know in the comment section but for now May the Fourth be with you.
