How To Make Successful Resolutions And Can They Make Our Businesses Better?

Well as we have said many times before 2020 was…a year but let’s put that behind us now. We are officially in 2021 and as is the custom people are making resolutions or planning the year ahead. This article isn’t about what my resolutions are or what you should be thinking about when making your resolutions (for that we have an article all about planning check the link right here!). This is more of a thought piece as to why I think we do it and how we can take it forward in our business dealing and with each other.

New Year New Me

That is the phrase we hear at least once at this time of year. The idea that this year is the year you are going to change something if not everything about oneself. Problem with that whole mentality is that sets an unhealthy precedent.  You get so enthusiastic and come up with all these ideas and while you may keep up with them you will eventually drown under their collective weight. Why do we do this? Well it’s a very natural thing. We think that change can happen quickly and if we will it then we can change. While some of us are able to do that not everyone can.

We can easily forget that the greatest change happens over time. I am not the same person I was 10 years ago, I’m now generally more active and productive than when I was in my late teens. That changed happened over many years and as my own priorities changed. That enthusiasm you feel at the start of the year is a good thing, but try and channel it into changing 1 or 2 things in a year. That alone will provide enough of a challenge.

New Year, New Business

You could be setting up a business (if you are, good on you!) or you could be looking to fix or change something (again good on you).  Now is actually the best time to review your business procedures. This time of year there’s a little bit more money in the budget so you can afford to look at how things work and if anything needs updating or even overhauled. How often over the last few years have businesses had to change a practice because it was either not up to par or shady? Why not get into the spirit of a New Year’s resolution and see what shady or substandard practice you could rectify? It would save you PR trouble in the long term and it would also help you keep on top of things. That’s just one idea for you, there are loads of other things you could do.
