Things to think About – Logos

Give us a share

Logos are the images that stick out in a customer’s brain when thinking about your brand. I say Disney and you go to the iconic Mickey Mouse silhouette.  We encounter logo’s everyday, but when it comes to designing your own it can seem daunting. How do you sell your business in just a logo? What are the things you should think about? Well that’s what this blog is here to help with!

Connection to the brand

Finding the right symbol for your brand is the key. It has to be unique enough to stand out from the crowd, but also say a little something about you. Amazon have the A with a line underneath it in the shape of a smile which is the feeling they want their customers to have when they receive their package. Think about the feelings or images you’d like to be a part of your identity.

The right balance

Some people’s first inclination when designing a logo is have their name in a bold font in a dynamic colour. The problem with this is that while it is a logo that works quite well, when you’re a start-up it’s hard for you to stand out. On the other end you may feel that if you throw a bunch of symbols and colours you’ll stand out. Nope it makes you look like a toddler who got into the crayons. All the best logos find the right balance between lettering and iconography. Apple, Nike and McDonalds have logos that are a mixture of simple shapes and words.

Colours

Once you have the basic shape of the logo try to keep the colours simple, research what colours suit your brand by looking into their meaning. Colours imply different connotations when we look at them.  Red is fire, passion and having a good time, while Blue implies water, calm and intellect. Find what works for you, your brand and stick with it.

The Superhero Principle

This might seem out there and weird, but stick with me here. Superheroes have been around for the batter part of the last 80 years and from pretty much day one they’ve had logos or symbols associated with them. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, The Flash, all have logos that can be argued are their brand. They all do things that I believe in, they keep it simple, they stick to 2 or 3 colours and they tweak it to keep it relevant.  The moment things get too busy or chaotic that’s when someone loses interest.

Stick to these ideas and you should be fine. After all, these are the ideas that helped when I made my logo.
