New Year’s Eve – What Did we Learn in 2020?

It’s New Year’s Eve of probably one of the most difficult years in recent memory. We’ve had the fires in Australia, COVID, escalation of the BLM movement, Economies suffering and a certain very divisive election. All of those on their own is enough to define a year, but the fact that it all happened in the same year! Well, it’s over now and things seem to be on the up and up. So that begs the question what have we learnt this year?

Resilience

However much we complain about how difficult this year is the fact that we were able to make through it at all and relatively in one piece is a thing to be proud of. If you had told me back in March the exact number of things that can and will go wrong I would think that you were either drunk, high or both. This is a testament to how resilient we as humans can be and how we can change and adapt.

2020 Vision

You know the classic phrase hindsight is 2020, well we have certainly learnt that this year when it comes to business. For years it was assumed that in order to work we had to be in the office. This year has taught us that surprisingly we are able to work just as well at home, which has left many of us wondering why we didn’t see that before. I went into this in more detail in my article Working from Home, which highlights my thoughts and what I think will happen in the future.

Attitudes have changed

A common belief held by many people pre-lockdown was that they didn’t like people and would be quite happy to stay indoors. Then lockdown hit and people found themselves stuck inside the house and to their surprise craving human contact. People reached out to people they hadn’t talked to in years, rekindling relationships they thought were lost long ago. People’s attitudes have changed, becoming more tolerant and thoughtful towards one another. Kindness isn’t seen as a bad thing now, compassion for others is a thing we celebrate.

Those are some of the things I think we’ve learnt in 2020. Let’s just hope that 2021 will be less tumultuous. Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!
