For many years it has been an accepted fact that using the internet can be risky. For some, it might be having your data mined, in other cases you may say or do the wrong thing. There are even cases where your alleged to have done something to slander your name. But in a lot of cases it can literally ruin your life.

Far too often the internet is used as a weapon.

What is Online Slander?

Posts that are made to insinuate something, nudes (or even fakes) have been uploaded, people have been supposedly exposed. All of which ruin an individual’s life. To add insult to injury, in some cases someone then turns around and offers a crazy fee to take the post down. If you want to hold onto what’s left of your reputation you pay it.

It’s not hard to see why online slander is a lucrative business. For some sites the click bait title alone is enough to generate income. As for businesses the insinuation that competition is not on the level might be enough to give them an edge. The sad thing is there are very real people suffering as a consequence of this.

Hopefully not for much longer though.

Known Victims

Google has introduced a system called “known victims” that allows people to report to the company any of the instances above. It will then suppress any mentions of the subject in its algorithm, making it harder to be found. While Google in the past has resisted policing the web, David Graff, Google’s vice president for global policy and standards has said “We can’t police the web, but we can be responsible citizens.” It’s refreshing to hear a company speak in such a way and treating users as not a faceless mass, but as individuals.

This decision hasn’t been made in a vacuum. After certain events over the last few years (I’m sure you can think of a few) Google has faced calls to be more involved in the algorithm. Having humans looking over certain things after misinformation has spread (or in this case to prevent it) has been a call from Google’s critics.

Future of the Internet?

Going forward, it’s quite right to question how well this will be implemented. It’s going to require data and a lot of oversight to get it up and running. Also there is the real possibility that bad actors could use it to supress things they don’t want found out i.e. abuse of power. But, I don’t think anyone is reasonably expecting it to be a perfect system out of the gate and I can’t help but feel like this is a win for victims.

Last week I jumped onto Instagram and scrolled. The first thing that popped up was a notification from the app asking if I wanted to see like numbers. After a few seconds I decided that I didn’t want to see them. It was only later in the day when I had some time to myself that I asked myself why?

Why did I decide not to see the like numbers? Simple, I didn’t like how it made me or my peers feel. Let me explain.

Chasing validation

The whole point of social media is to interact with friends and family, see how they’re doing on a day to day basis or get their thoughts. In theory a ‘like’ is there to show the person that you agree with them or you enjoyed what they posted. In reality you might post a status or photo and get likes and comments. At the time when you get a few likes you feel good. You feel validated. But, what happens if your next post isn’t as popular? What if it doesn’t get the same amount of adulation? You feel sad or you question what you did wrong. Thus next time you post something you go back to what you did the first time and BOOM! All of the likes and comments. Your brain is filled with dopamine and your brain associates likes and the validation that comes with it as a good thing. You then repeat the cycle to get your fix, but every time you feel you need more and more to satisfy that itch. In other words you become addicted. That is why you may find yourself endlessly scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, they’re built to be addictive.

Likes as currency

With that dangerous mix in came big business and the influencers. Influencers would chase fame and the likes and validation that came with it. If they did something and gained praise for it, then they repeated it and gained more “clout”. Because they were seen as big in the space, they then drew the attention of brands who then paid them for sponsorship spots in posts. Since they got spots it made them seem even more valued in the eyes of both influencers and their audience. The cycle continues on and on.

This also had a knock on effect that when someone sees someone acting a certain way and getting praise for it, more people jump on the bandwagon. In the end you have a homogenous group begging and asking for likes acting in more and more extreme ways. When people don’t get the validation they crave, they fall into a depression. On the other hand, people who are successful can feel trapped by the cycle they have found themselves in.

No one wins in that situation. You compare your numbers to someone else and you feel worthless or less than. Or you feel trapped by your own success.

That is why I chose to not see the numbers. In some small way I’m breaking that cycle. I can like a post or post something and not have to see a reminder of how well or bad it’s doing on Instagram. It can just be there and you know what? I wish more platforms did it.
We are now at the halfway point of the year and that begs the question has anything changed this year? For many people we started out 2021 with hope and optimism, fairly quickly it seemed like 2020 the sequel. So I thought now would be a good time to take stock and think about how it might affect you and your company.

We have a vaccine!

That is probably the biggest difference compared to this time last year. People are getting vaccinated and many countries around the globe are slowly opening up, slowly but surely. That means some businesses are encouraging workers to come back to the office. Retail, entertainment and hospitality industries are all seeing a boom after a hard year.

Remember not everywhere has been as fortunate to get vaccines so there may still be some variants. That is why it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant otherwise we may see a return to last year and we all know how that affected us. It’s probably something we don’t want to ever go through again.

More social awareness

There is a notable push by companies to be more socially aware in 2021 and try to change or apologise for previous actions. While this is undoubtedly a good thing, it’s debatable as to how much of it is because it looks good optics wise as opposed to a concerted effort to change.

I think having businesses that take responsibility for previous actions can only be a good thing, and I encourage others to do so. Going forward, I think we’ll see companies be more inclusive and open to more points of view. I think there is always room to grow here.

Changing things up

After the last year in lockdown, it has given many people the opportunity to rethink their lives and ask the fundamental question, what do they want in life? I can tell you from experience I had a long hard think in lockdown about what I wanted and how to get it. I’m not the only one. Many of my friends seem to have thought the same and changed the direction of where they were going. I can therefore only assume that it’s happening the world over.

This means there are thousands of people out there dedicated to improving themselves and thirsty for opportunity. These people will be able to bring new ways of thinking or switch up dynamics causing innovation. So while we may not see a change in 2021, we will undoubtedly see change in the years to come.

It’s on that positive note that I’m going to end it this week. While it’s easy to think we’ve slid back or that we haven’t moved at all, let’s take the opportunity to appreciate how far we’ve come in a year that hasn’t always been easy. If you want more articles like this one then why don’t you check out our Blog page? We publish articles every week so it’s worthwhile following us on Facebook, Twitter or checking back in with us regularly.

Now a lot of what he has done with Aviation Gin is funny but this one in particular stands out. Peloton released an ad that had a wife get a Peloton for Christmas from her husband. It was seen as odd or a bit tone deaf. Less than a week later Ryan Reynolds posts a sequel to it in which the wife from the actual ad trading the exercise bike for a cocktail. It makes fun of the original ad and at the same time he got a bunch of publicity.

Over the course of the last few weeks I’ve been sharpening up my Web Coding. I’ve covered HTML, CSS and Javascript and if they sound like jibberish to you, rest assured they aren’t . They’re all components that go into building every website you visit. This journey has got me thinking though what are some of the things I wished I knew when I started out? Here are my thoughts

Coding takes time

The first few weeks of this course I was a man possessed. I’d get up and go through weeks worth of material in a matter of days (admittedly these were 3-4 hour lectures). This was all in the vain hope that if I got through things quickly then I’d be able to get onto other things. The problem with this line of thinking was that when it came to doing the practical’s I wasn’t entirely sure what to do. I’d end up spending more time either re-watching the lectures or trawling through forums to get clarification on things. While this was useful, it also meant that I’d get confused or frustrated and have to start from scratch.

More often than not the answers were in the lecture material I was so eager to get through. If I had just taken the time then and there to get to grips with it then I would have saved myself a lot of time in the long run.

Javascript is worth the time you put in

By the time I had reached the Javascript section of the course, I had learnt my first lesson. I was taking my time and trying to absorb as much as I could. That was until I hit Java and it was like suddenly hitting a brick wall. Try as I might, I couldn’t figure out the logic, how do you write it and the forum’s just couldn’t help. I’d get even more confused by what I was reading.

Then something happened looking through the forums I saw a discussion about the assignment I had been set and as I read it, I started to understand bits of it. I could see how certain bits were broken down and how they operated. I was able to complete the assignment and hand it in to my relief. Now I am by no means a Javascript expert (in coding terms I’m still a newbie). But, I can now adapt and change code I need if I have a reliable source (W3 has come in clutch). I’ve still got a lot to learn but I’m on my way.

Over confidence may get in your way

When I started these courses I thought I knew a fair amount of web development. Having done a little coding I thought I could get through it fairly quickly. See the first section for how that turned out. I was then humbled by Javascript . Looking back, my overconfidence was getting in my own way a little. Since I was used to doing it a certain way, I never really thought about the work that had actually gone into developing the tools I used every day. Now I have the utmost respect for the people who came before me and the tools that they used. I can also look at a web page and quickly figure out what bits are html, CSS and Javascript. Doing this now keeps me on my toes and I’m constantly learning.

So those are just some of the things I’ve learnt through this course. Some of it was technical and some of it was personal but both challenged me. They don’t work well, they don’t communicate with each other, and it culminates in a tense argument in the lab. Even with the Helicarrier under attack they aren’t working together. That is until the death of Phil Coulson. He was a character most members of the team had an interaction or relationship with so it affects them. Uniting together, they plan to avenge him (see what they did there?) and stop the villain. From this point on, they work well together and manage to save the day.

You’ll find that in most cases if a team has a common goal or objective to rally behind, they do accomplish it. Just try and keep it reasonable! Perhaps have a larger goal, but divide it into smaller, more achievable ones that the team can work through slowly together.

Age of Ultron (2015) – Ego

Let’s make this short. In Age of Ultron Tony goes off (with the help of Bruce) and makes an AI to help protect the world. Said AI Ultron goes nuts and sets about trying to end the world. What was the issue here? Tony in his hubris and ego thought he could control something and got in over his head. Throughout the film he tries to justify his actions and doesn’t readily admit that he has done anything wrong. Ego can destroy a team’s dynamic if it isn’t dealt with.

In a work environment putting your ego aside to get the job done is often the best thing you can do. Even if it is easier said than done! I’m not saying ego in itself is a bad thing, in fact it drives a lot of our actions but when it is harmful then you need to check yourself. A simple way of doing this is by asking yourself if you are doing this because you believe it’s the right thing to do or because it was your idea?

Captain America: Civil War (2016) – Compromise

The premise is that after a disaster involving the Avengers in order to keep functioning they have to sign up to be agents of the U.N. Captain America is against it since as he says “regieme’s change” he believes that they are best being autonomous. Through a series of events the Avengers fracture and come to blows.

The issue at the heart of this is compromise. It’s made explicit that the Avengers can’t keep acting as they have until now, but Steve’s concerns are valid. The issue here is that he doesn’t offer a valid alternative solution to the problem. There is a brief moment when he contemplates signing with the understanding they can amend it later, but when he learns about Wanda’s fate he digs his feet in and doesn’t move. Rightly or wrongly this then sets up the conflict for the film. Both sides’ unwillingness to compromise breaks the team and results in future failures.

Another issue raised is micro-management. The accords at the end of the day are there to dictate what the Avengers can and can’t do. I can tell you from experience micro-management doesn’t promote strong team cohesion. It leaves the team feeling dejected and unable to do their job without someone breathing down their necks. I’ve found that teams work well when they have a level of autonomy so this sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Avengers: Infinity War – Communication

The big bad Thanos comes back and because the team broke up he has a much easier time beating the heroes. The crux of this film is lack of communication. Tony has an opportunity to call Steve to get his help, but instead of swallowing his pride and ego (that seems to be a theme) he chooses to go it alone. The team is split into two distinct groups who although they have moderate success they ultimately fail.

Now it’s debatable if they had been working together would they have won the day. I think one thing we can all agree on though is that they would have improved their chances. Being able to communicate well as a team is fundamental when working together. It allows you to make sure you’re all on the same page.

Avengers: Endgame – Learn from the past

After all their previous missteps as a team they are finally firing on all cylinders and are able to save the day. Gone are the ego’s, the communication problems and micro-management. In their place is a team that formulates plans together, that are united behind a common goal and work autonomously to that large goal. The issues they face come from external factors and not from within the team. When they are working together it is glorious and they are able to achieve more than they have ever done.
I’ve been watching the Phillip De Franco show since 2015. Since then he has been part of my daily routine giving the rundown of the news. While his language can get a little spicy I appreciate the effort he puts in. He has such an attention to detail and makes sure he gets his facts straight. On the few times he’s had to clarify something he comes out and says it, which in modern news coverage is amazing. I love that he clearly has a passion for what he does and he doesn’t hold back on his own opinions on stories either.

The Beginnings

Back in the late 00’s British television was invaded by an Italian Opera Singer trying to get people to visit Go Compare, a price comparison website. The premise of the early ads was that someone would be talking about their car insurance and then boom, he appears and sings about all the money you could save at Go Compare, then people jump into song with him while first person watches on in bemusement. Over time they’d change up the style the songs were sung in or the setting but it always followed a similar format. That was until 2012.

Go Compare man returns

In 2016 we saw the return of the Go Compare man. He gave a big performance singing the classic song and he was back on our screens. Only this time they seemed to have learnt from their past. The ads weren’t annoying and instead focused on Gio being the focal point in recreations of actual claims like a deer running out in the road. It delivered the point and stuck to the brand’s over all look and feel. Then Covid happened and being unable to do as many large scale ads, they focused on blurring the line between Gio and the man that plays him Wynne Evans. Showing us his actual singing skill and him slowly putting on the costume. For the most part that is the direction they’re keeping the ads and it probably will be for the foreseeable.

The Go Compare adverts are an interesting example of the rise, fall and rise again of mascot. It’s clear they’re learnt from past mistakes and are willing to try something new. They, like Compare the Market have fully embraced their mascot and are using it across their branding. It’s a nice success story to see. What do you think of the Go Compare adverts? Let us know in the comment section.

Links tip the SEO Scale

The Internet is full of connected sites. It’s one of the reasons why it’s called the web. One thing that search engines look for is if your site has connections internally and externally. The internal ones lets it know that there is more to see beyond just a single page. External links are for how you’re connected to the wider network. The better connected you are, the more links. General consensus is that it’s better to have links going both ways. If you’re just starting out, that isn’t always possible. A simple SEO tip is creating a social media presence. A Facebook or Twitter page will show search engines that your site is credible and will help give you a little SEO boost.

Content is Important!

I am not going to lie to you. This is the one aspect I end up spending a lot of time working on. There is so much that goes into it so let’s jump in to some of the more common SEO tips.

Sentences – Sentence structure on your website is so important. How many times have you been reading a sentence and you have found that it goes on and on and you eventually either lose track or the will to live because there is so much to take in and your brain can’t focus on it. Like that last one for example. Keeping your sentences short and to the point will help you in the long run. It allows the reader to take in the information at their own pace.

Language – What kind of language you are using is another factor you have to take into consideration. If you find yourself using a lot of industry terms or lesser used words ask yourself a question. “Would I be able to follow this if I didn’t know this topic?” Better yet, try and get someone else to read it. Looking at it from the outside in WILL help. I’ve lost count of when someone used flowery terms or language that could be distilled into something simpler. More often than not, keeping it simple helps it be readable and SEO friendly.

Alt text – In case you don’t know what alt text is let me explain. If an image doesn’t load or if you’re using a screen reader it explains what should be there. Your alt-text should really be linked to the subject of the page. If your article is about London a picture of Big Ben should have something simple like “Big Ben in London”. Believe me it might sound silly or reductive but it does help!

All of these tips are here to make sure that your content is easy to follow. If they aren’t able to find the information they came for they will click off.

Keywords make ALL the difference

The bull’s-eye is the hyper specific thing while the middle ring acts as the go between. A good example is Marvel (that’s the outer ring) loads of people write about it so there is a lot of competition for it. Then if we go to the bull’s-eye I can say the Starjammers is more niche, but you’ve got less competition. You want to try and find the middle ground. Luckily if you have a google ad account you can use it to research ad words (keywords) that you can use. It will tell you which ones are more used so you can cater your approach to fit your business or page.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is a phrase you’ll hear about when looking at websites (or anything online really). SEO is used to make sure your site appears in front of the right people and is categorised properly by search engines. For example if your website is about Star Wars you want to make sure that or something related to it appears as one of your Keywords. So this week’s article is going to look at why SEO and Keywords are important along with a couple of tips.

The Wild West of SEO

SEO and Keywords date back to the early days of the internet. They allow for search engines to comb through and find sites relevant to what the user needs. People used to do all sorts of shady things to hide the keywords and trick people into clicking on the site. They’d hide it in the background, behind pop ups in the meta data among other sneaky ways. As time has gone on search engines have gotten more sophisticated and look at more than just the keywords they look at the context also.

Let’s go back to the Star Wars example for a second to illustrate the point. Say your website has a page about Luke Skywalker. Back in the day people would make sure that the phrase “Luke Skywalker” appeared repeatedly even if didn’t make a lot of sense. Instead of “His father is Darth Vader” it would be “Luke Skywalker is the son of Darth Vader”. Now that doesn’t seem so bad, but when it replaces he, his or they then it becomes annoying. The reason for this was that search engines would look for how many times the phrase appeared on the page. The more times it did, well that clearly meant your page was better. This meant you got more clicks and therefore, rose to the top of searches.

Now though, if you were to try and pull that trick search engines actively push you down for trying to game the system in such a way. You also have to use it in ways that make sense grammatically as well. Another thing that search engines look for is if you are using phrases associated with your keyword. An article about Luke that doesn’t mention Lightsaber’s, Jedi, Darth Vader, etc. isn’t going to get very far.

Do we still need it?

Some people say that keywords and SEO is outdated and you just need to use Google Ads to get your site seen. I don’t buy into that, for the simple fact that as part of the Ad you have to have keywords and choose a field you want to appear in. That means you have to spend time researching the correct wording. This then begs the question if you’re going to do the work for the ad why not give your site a boost as well?

In my experience I just ignore or quickly pass over the ads. If I type in Deliveroo to my search engine and the first thing that pops up is a paid ad for Just Eat I’m just going to scroll down to the one I actually want. So ads are by no means a guarantee. They help, but they work best with a site that uses SEO and Keywords well.

Often this advice is given by people who own companies that have funds to put into those kinds of campaigns. If you’re a small business whose funds are tight, then this isn’t really a practical solution. There is the old adage you have to spend money to make money but in certain situations that’s not practical. If you have strong SEO to begin with you can build your consumer base and bring in funds to buy ads.

To Sum Up

In short, SEO is an important part of your website. Finding the right words and balance is one of the trickier parts of the whole process, but it is worth the effort. Now if you need some more pointers to get it up to a good standard then you’re in luck! Next week’s article has some useful tips on how to build and get the best SEO possible. So check back in next week on our Blog page. We publish articles every week so it’s worthwhile following us on Facebook or checking back in with us regularly.
